Joel Ruderman is Of Counsel in Watt Tieder’s Creditors’ Rights, Bankruptcy, and Insolvency Practice. He focuses his practice on bankruptcy and creditors’ rights. The majority of his clients are financial institutions, sureties, and other creditor-parties who must protect their rights in connection with construction, real estate related loans and other types of obligations that are either in default or at risk of default.

Joel has 30 years of experience with bankruptcy and commercial litigation matters in private practice and as an attorney for the United States. During his career, Joel has represented numerous debtors, creditors, and bankruptcy trustees. Immediately prior to working at Watt Tieder, for approximately 20 years, Joel was an assistant general counsel with the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, the United States government agency responsible for regulating private pensions. In this capacity, he represented the federal pension regulator on creditor’s committees and before numerous courts in many of the largest and most complex bankruptcy cases throughout the United States, including cases in the airline, health care, energy, telecommunications, retail, and automotive industries. Joel has also worked as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the civil division of the United States Attorney’s office for the District of Maryland.

Joel has served as the co-chair for the American Bankruptcy Institute’s Labor and Employment Committee and served as an officer of the American Bankruptcy Institute’s Pension Committee. He has spoken at numerous professional conferences throughout the United States regarding bankruptcy and pension related issues. Joel is currently a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Walter Chandler Inn of Court focusing on bankruptcy law.
